5 Tips to Optimise Your Currency Exchange in Morocco
Think exchanging money is a standardised operation? Think again. In Morocco, every dirham counts. Here's how to gain a few extra precious dirhams with every transaction.
The Moroccan exchange market is very dynamic. Unlike some European countries where rates are fixed by large banks, in Morocco, competition between thousands of licensed exchange bureaus works in your favour. You just need to know how to play it.
1. The Golden Rule: Flee the Airports
This is trap #1. You arrive tired at Mohammed V (Casablanca) or Marrakech-Menara. Exchange kiosks glitter in the terminal.
The Problem: These bureaus pay exorbitant rents. They pass this cost to customers. The rate difference with the city can reach 10% to 15%.
The Tip: Exchange just the bare minimum (€20 or €50) to pay for your taxi or train to the city centre. Save the bulk of your budget for city exchange.
2. The Power of Negotiation
This may surprise Europeans, but in Morocco, currency is merchandise like everything else. If you're exchanging a significant sum (over €1,000 or $1,000), the rate displayed on the board isn't necessarily the final rate.
- Dare to ask: "Give me a better rate, I have 2,000 euros".
- Play competition: "The bureau next door is offering me 10.85, can you match?" In 80% of cases, they will match to avoid losing the transaction.
3. Your Banknote Quality Matters
Moroccan banks and exchange bureaus are extremely demanding about the physical quality of foreign banknotes they buy. They must be able to resell them to the Central Bank.
Warning: A torn, taped, ink-stained, faded note or one with pen markings will be systematically refused. Check your euros before departure!
4. Timing Is Crucial (Avoid Weekends)
The global currency market (Forex) is closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening. During this period, official rates don't move.
However, as a precaution, many exchange bureaus increase their "spread" (safety margin)
on weekends to protect against a potential rate drop when markets open Monday morning.
Tip: Exchange preferably on weekdays, Monday to Friday lunchtime.
5. Use Reliable Comparators
Knowledge is power. If you walk into a bureau with no idea of today's euro value, you're an easy target.
Use tools like Deviz.ma to know the day's median rate. If the official rate is 10.90 and you're offered 10.40, you immediately know it's a bad deal.
