Summer 2026: Where to Exchange Currency Before Travelling to Morocco?
Summer holidays are approaching. Should you exchange your Euros or Pounds before leaving or after arriving? Here is the optimal strategy to maximise your holiday budget.
🇬🇧/🇪🇺 Exchange in UK/Europe: Bad Idea?
In 95% of cases, yes. European exchange bureaus (like Travelex in train stations or airports) apply margins from 10% to 20% on the Moroccan Dirham. It's an exotic currency for them, so rates are catastrophic.
The only exception: if you arrive very late at night in a small town without an ATM, bringing £30-£50 or €30-50 in dirhams is acceptable.
🇲🇦 Exchange in Morocco: The Golden Rule
Always exchange in Morocco. Rates are much better because:
- The Dirham is the local currency, meaning much more competition between bureaus.
- Margins are indirectly regulated by Bank Al-Maghrib.
🗓️ Best Time of Summer to Exchange?
- Early June: Calm period before mass tourist arrivals. Often the most favourable rates.
- July-August: High season. Strong demand for Euros can play in your favour, but airports and hotels take advantage of this to inflate their margins.
- Weekdays: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday generally offer better rates than weekends.
