Exchange Currency Without Fees: Guide & Tips - Deviz.ma

"0% commission" doesn't always mean it's free. This guide reveals our best tips to exchange your currencies without fees and avoid the traps.

When preparing a trip, we often wonder how to exchange currencies without hidden fees. You may have seen those "0% Fees" signs. It's marketing argument #1. But beware, it doesn't guarantee the best rate.

Tip #1: Understanding the "Spread"

An exchange bureau is a business like any other: it must pay rent, employees and make a profit. If it doesn't charge a fixed commission (e.g. 20 MAD per transaction), it earns from the exchange rate itself. This is called the spread.

Concrete Example:

Imagine the official (interbank) Euro rate is 1 EUR = 10.80 MAD.
A "no commission" bureau may decide to buy your Euro at 10.40 MAD.
This 0.40 MAD gap per Euro is their hidden margin. On €1,000, that's 400 MAD in invisible fees!

Airport vs City: The Big Gap

The golden rule: avoid airports as much as possible. Terminal bureaus pay exorbitant rents. To compensate, they apply much higher margins than city bureaus.

Our advice: exchange just the minimum at the airport, then use Deviz.ma to find the best city centre bureau.

Buy vs Sell: Don't Read the Wrong Column

Exchange boards always have two columns: Buy and Sell. The confusion is common:

  • Buy: The price at which the bureau BUYS your foreign currency for Dirhams. Look at this column if you're arriving from abroad with Euros.
  • Sell: The price at which the bureau SELLS you foreign currency. Look at this column if you're leaving and want Euros.

Beware of the Black Market

It may be tempting to exchange "on the black market" or on the street for a few extra cents. However, risks are immense: counterfeit notes, counting tricks, and above all, it's illegal. By using a licensed bureau, you get traceability and fund security, plus an exchange receipt essential for converting leftover Dirhams at the end of your stay.

How to Spot "Net" Rates?

At Deviz.ma, we advocate total transparency. Partner bureaus on our comparator display "net" rates — the displayed rate is the final rate, already including the changer's margin. No processing fees, no surprise taxes.

To verify yourself, pull out your calculator:
Amount to exchange × Displayed rate = Amount received
If the teller asks for additional fees or the received amount is lower, refuse the transaction.

The Online Booking Advantage

The exchange market is volatile. Rates change several times daily. By booking through our comparator, you lock in the rate instantly. The bureau commits to honouring the deal when you visit. No more nasty surprises on site.
