Euro Buying Price in Morocco Today: Buy vs Sell Rate Explained
When you look up the price of the euro in Morocco, you come across two different numbers: the buying rate and the selling rate. Which one applies to you? How much will you actually receive? Everything is explained here.
π Buy vs Sell: Who's Buying What?
This is the number one source of confusion. When an exchange bureau displays a buying rate and a selling rate, it's from the bureau's perspective, not yours!
- BUYING rate (taux d'achat): The price at which the bureau buys your euros from you. If you arrive in Morocco with euros, THIS rate applies. It's the LOWER figure.
- SELLING rate (taux de vente): The price at which the bureau sells you euros. If you're leaving Morocco and want to convert dirhams back to euros, this is the HIGHER figure (less favourable for you).
π‘ The Golden Rule
Arriving in Morocco (EUR β MAD)? Look at the BUYING rate.
The higher, the better for you.
Leaving Morocco (MAD β EUR)? Look at the SELLING rate.
The lower, the better for you.
π The Official Bank Al-Maghrib Rate
Every day, Bank Al-Maghrib (Morocco's central bank) publishes a reference rate for the dirham against major currencies. This rate serves as the base for all operators (banks and exchange bureaus).
Banks and bureaus then apply their own margin (the "spread") around this central rate. The difference between the buying and selling rate constitutes the intermediary's profit.
| Intermediary | Average EUR/MAD Spread | What You Lose on 1,000β¬ |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange bureau (city) | 0.5 β 1.5% | 50 β 150 MAD |
| Traditional bank | 2 β 4% | 200 β 400 MAD |
| Airport / Hotel | 8 β 15% | 800 β 1,500 MAD! |

Moroccan banks publish their exchange rates daily. Here's an indicative comparison of typical spreads (the exact rate changes each day):
- Banque Populaire: Average spread of 2.5 to 3%. Largest branch network in Morocco.
- CIH Bank: Spread of 2 to 3%. Good urban coverage.
- Attijariwafa: Spread of 2 to 3%. Morocco's largest bank.
- BMCE / Bank of Africa: Spread of 2.5 to 3.5%. International presence.
Verdict: Banks are convenient but rarely the cheapest. Licensed exchange bureaus in the city centre consistently offer better rates thanks to competition.
π‘ How to Check the Buying Price Before Exchanging
- Check the Bank Al-Maghrib rate β This is the reference rate. Any rate offered below 97% of this rate is poor.
- Compare on Deviz.ma β The comparator shows actual rates offered by partner exchange bureaus in your city.
- Ask for the "net" rate β Before putting your bills on the counter, ask for the exact rate and verify there's no additional commission.
