Best Exchange Bureau in Tangier: The 2026 Guide

Gateway to Africa, Tangier is a crossroads where the Dirham and Euro coexist daily. But beware — between Tanger Ville Port, the famous Boulevard Pasteur and the Malabata area, rates vary enormously. Here's where to go to maximise your budget.

When arriving in Tangier, whether by ferry (Tarifa/Algeciras) or by plane, the temptation to change money immediately is strong. It's often a costly mistake. Rate differences between the port and city centre can represent up to 10% of the amount exchanged.

Tanger Ville Port: The Classic Trap

Exchange bureaus inside the Maritime Station (Tanger Ville Port) take advantage of their strategic position. "Captive" tourists who've just disembarked often accept mediocre rates out of convenience.

Our advice: If you don't have any Dirhams, exchange the bare minimum at the port (20 to 50 Euros for a taxi and a coffee) and save the rest for the city centre.

Boulevard Pasteur: The Best Spot

This is the main artery of modern Tangier. Boulevard Pasteur and its side streets concentrate a large number of licensed exchange bureaus.

  • Why? Competition is fierce. Bureaus are right next to each other, forcing them to display very tight margins to attract clients.
  • The right move: Walk up the boulevard, compare the LED signs. Rates are often "Net of commission".
  • Hours: Most stay open late in the evening, very convenient if you arrive at the end of the day.

Socco Alto and Malabata

In shopping centres like Socco Alto or Ibn Batouta, you'll find exchange bureaus. It's convenient and secure, but rates are generally slightly worse than Boulevard Pasteur due to high commercial rents. In Malabata (Hilton/Mövenpick hotel area), rates are decent but rarely the city's best.

Beware of "Street Exchange"

In the Medina (Petit Socco) or around the port, individuals may offer you street exchange. Systematically refuse. It's illegal, you risk getting counterfeit bills, and you won't have an exchange receipt (essential for reconverting your dirhams to euros at the end of your trip).
