Whether you arrive via Menara Airport, by train at Marrakech Station, or by bus, the temptation to exchange your currency immediately is strong. Yet a few minutes of patience can save you between 5 and 15% on your exchange. The secret? Knowing the right neighbourhoods.
🛫 Menara Airport: The Most Expensive Trap
Airport exchange bureaus consistently display the worst rates in the city. Their margin can reach 8 to 12% compared to the interbank rate.
- What they tell you: "No commission". Technically true, but the spread (buy/sell gap) is astronomical.
- Our advice: Exchange only 20 to 50€ for the taxi to the city centre (around 100-150 MAD). Keep the rest.
- Alternative: ATMs in the arrivals hall sometimes offer a better rate, but watch out for your bank's fees.
🏙️ Gueliz (New Town): Best Value for Safety
Gueliz is Marrakech's modern district. This is where you'll find the highest concentration of licensed exchange bureaus, particularly on Avenue Mohammed V and Rue de la Liberté.
- Why it's the best spot: Competition between bureaus is intense. They're literally side by side, driving margins down.
- Typical rates: On average only 2 to 4% margin compared to the official Bank Al-Maghrib rate.
- Hours: Most open from 8:30 AM to 8 PM, sometimes 9 PM in high season.
- Safety: All bureaus are licensed by the Office des Changes. You receive an official receipt.

The Medina and the famous Jemaa el-Fna square are packed with small exchange bureaus. Rates are generally decent but not as good as Gueliz.
- Advantage: If your riad is in the Medina, it's the most practical.
- Disadvantage: Some unlicensed changers operate in the alleyways. Stick to bureaus with a shopfront and an LED rate display sign.
- Tip: Bureaus at the beginning of Rue Bab Agnaou often offer good rates as they compete directly with each other.
⚠️ Beware of "Street Exchange"
Around Jemaa el-Fna or in the souks, individuals may approach you offering "unbeatable rates". Absolutely refuse. It's illegal, you risk receiving counterfeit bills, and you won't get a receipt (essential for reconverting your dirhams at the end of your trip).
