Exchange Bureau Morocco: Definition, Role and Regulations

You see them on every corner in tourist areas, but what exactly is an exchange bureau? What's its role compared to banks and what regulations apply in Morocco?

An exchange bureau in Morocco is an intermediary financial establishment whose main activity is buying and selling foreign currencies against the local currency (the Dirham). Unlike banks, they don't offer current accounts or loans. They specialise in manual exchange.

Exchange Bureau Regulations in Morocco

Exchange activity is not free. It's strictly supervised by the Office des Changes. Every manual changer in Morocco must obtain official approval to operate. They must clearly display their rates (buy and sell) and issue an exchange receipt for every transaction.

The Economic Role

They play a crucial role for:

  • Tourists who need cash in local currency.
  • Moroccans Residing Abroad (MRE) returning home.
  • Moroccan residents travelling abroad (Tourist allowance).

Regulations protect the consumer. If a bureau refuses to give you a receipt or practices off-market rates without display, be wary.
