Best Exchange Bureau in Fes: New Town or Medina? (2026)
Morocco's spiritual capital, Fes attracts travellers from around the world for its UNESCO-listed Medina. But where can you change your euros without losing money? Our neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide.
Fes is divided into two worlds: the New Town (modern district) and Fes el-Bali (the ancient Medina). Exchange rates vary significantly between these two areas. A savvy tourist can save up to 8% by choosing the right spot.
🏢 New Town: The Smart Choice
Avenue Hassan II and Boulevard Mohammed V in the New Town have Fes's best exchange bureaus. Like in Casablanca or Rabat, competition works in your favour.
- Best rates: Margins of only 2 to 4%, sometimes less for large amounts.
- Licensed bureaus: All provide official receipts, essential for reconverting your dirhams.
- Convenient: Close to banks, ATMs and modern shops.
🕌 Fes el-Bali (Medina): Convenient but Pricier
Inside the Medina, particularly around Bab Boujloud (the Blue Gate) and Place R'cif, you'll find exchange bureaus. They apply higher margins (5 to 8%) because they know tourists staying in riads don't want to travel far.
Our advice: If you're staying in a Medina riad, pass through the New Town on arrival. Exchange enough for 2-3 days, then top up if needed.

Fes-Saiss Airport has a few exchange counters, but the rates are consistently the worst in the city. Exchange only what you need for the taxi (80-120 MAD to the centre).
💡 Special Tips for Fes
- Negotiate in dirhams in the souks: Fes artisans are known for charging higher prices if you pay in euros. Having dirhams gives you much better bargaining power.
- Avoid informal guides: Some "guides" will offer to take you to "the best money changer". They earn a commission, which is reflected in your rate.
- Keep your receipt: If you want to convert dirhams back to euros before leaving Morocco, the receipt is mandatory.
💡 Deviz Recap for Fes
Best rate: New Town (Avenue Hassan II / Bd Mohammed V).
Decent: Bab Boujloud and Place R'cif.
Avoid: Fes-Saiss Airport and informal changers.
